Japanese Fender Serial Number

It has an 'E' serial number followed by six digits. The Fender site says made between 1984 and 1987. What would be the difference between this guitar and a 'Fender Stratocaster Made in Japan'? The frets are so worn that it can't be set up with good action without string buzz. The pickups don't sound as good as my 1995 MIM Strat. Fender Product Registration - Serial number lookup. An original Fender Mustang bass is made in USA not Japan - Fender came out with the Mustang back in the 1960's.

I will assume that what you have is a Japanese made Fender Mustang Bass. While it is not one of the original USA made Mustang Basses from the 60's-70's, it is still a Fender Mustang of Japanese origin and it can be called a Fender Bass.
Plus it wont cost you $1500 bucks to scratch that Mustang Bass itch!
Good luck with your purchase.

The JD serials are a new progression so this will be a new or almost new instrument. Typically 2 letter Fender Japan serials have meant something special like Japan Vintage (JV) however I don't know what JD means now unless it is Japan Deluxe. I've seen it on vintage see through blondes a lot and also on instruments with headstocks painted to match the body. I think this is one of the latest serials out of Japan.
It is FENDER JAPAN, probably made by Fujigen in Matsumoto who makes most Fender Japan basses. I would strongly encourage you to buy a 1970's era USA made one. However if you can not afford or find one...you can make do with one by Fender Japan. I've never been happy with the electronics in a bass from Fender Japan but the fit and finish is great. The Japanese necks are top notch too. It is just the electronics that are not as good as Fender USA and sometimes the hardware is not as good either.
I would upgrade the pickups and everything else electronic chop-chop. Figure about $75 for the upgrades to make it sound more like a USA Mustang. The Fender USA pickup pair for a Mustang Bass is really pretty cheap and I'd for sure change it. A real 1970's Mustang can be had around here for $750 to $1500 if you look long enough. I really like the bridges on them a lot. The same pickups were also used in Fender USA BULLET Basses. To be so small they do sound good.

Sounds logical doesn't it? If someone working for Fender said that then it might be correct information. However I'm seeing JD serials on new high end stuff OUTSIDE of Japan which is sort of odd if it is a domestic market designation for Fender Japan instruments that were not intended to leave the domestic market. I'm not in Japan, but I'm seeing lots of JD serials on brand new Fender models of all sorts that are for sale in the USA including Aerodynes. The Stratosphere has dozens of JD serial Fender Japan necks for sale also. If it means 'Japan Domestic' then I have to wonder how all these JD serials are escaping Japan for the USA? Two letter Fender Japan serials usually are an acronym for something, which could be 'Japan Domestic' or could be 'Japanese Deluxe' since all the ones I've seen have been what you'd have to consider to be top shelf Fender Japan mass production stuff and not the sort of 'B' and 'C' grade instruments they peddle to most locals. Guess we'll find out someday. Fender Japan does love playing serial games.
